Cartas a mi hijo Camilo André
Max Robert & Jasibi Mosri | Toronto Letters Press
(Translates: Letters to my son Camilo André: the sea, the sky, you and I)
The book is a collection of letters written from father to son, who have been separated by immigration and painful family dynamics. It tells the story of a father who is trying to heal not only his own heart, but that of his young son.
Cover Design Rationale:
It was important to the author that the photograph taken by his eldest son was used for the cover. After exploring different options, it became clear to the author that he wanted to maintain as much of the original photograph as possible and to avoid heavy editing or cropping. For the lettering used in the title, he felt strongly that a hand-written font should be used to reflect the hand-written nature of the letters in the book. As a result, I used hand drawn lettering for this part of the design. For the back cover, the author indicated that it was important to him to have a vintage letter feeling to him, and wanted it to look water stained like it had floated in a message in a bottle to him and his son who was so far away from him.
Interior Design Rationale:
For the interior pages of the book, it was important that we clearly denoted whose voice was writing in each section of the book, as the book features letters from the first author, Max, and then later, input from the co-author, Jasibi, who provides a psychological perspective on the happenings of the book. A custom icon was created to help indicate which sections of the book were written as letters for Camilo.
